Choosing Your Drag Name

beginner 7 min read

Your Name Is Your Brand

Your drag name is the first thing people hear about you. Before they see your face, your outfit, or your talent — they see your name on a flyer or a social media handle. Make it count.

What Makes a Great Drag Name

  • Memorable: Easy to say, easy to spell, hard to forget
  • Personality match: It should give a hint of your vibe (campy, glam, dark, comedy)
  • Unique: Google it first. Check Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. If another queen is using it, move on.
  • Fun to say out loud: Imagine an emcee yelling it into a mic. Does it sound good?

Name Styles

The Pun

Classic drag. A play on words or a double entendre.

  • Examples: Anita Cocktail, Paige Turner, Ivana Humpalot
  • Works for: Comedy queens, camp performers, anyone who doesn't take themselves too seriously

The Character Name

A name that sounds like a person — but with flair.

  • Examples: Violet Chachki, Sasha Velour, Crystal Methyd
  • Works for: Fashion queens, artsy performers, those building a whole character world

The Statement

A name that IS the persona.

  • Examples: The Vivienne, Symone, Shea Coulee
  • Works for: Queens with a strong brand vision and presence

The Reference

Named after something — a place, a concept, a cultural reference.

  • Examples: Asia O'Hara, Shangela, Eureka
  • Works for: Queens who want a name with layers of meaning

The Process

  • Brain dump: Write down 30+ names without judging. Puns, words you love, characters that inspire you, inside jokes. Get it all out.
  • Say them out loud: In a mirror, at different volumes. "Please welcome to the stage... [name]!" Does it hit?
  • Test with friends: Tell a few people your top 3 picks. Which one do they remember the next day?
  • Google check: Search the name. Search it with "drag" next to it. If it's taken, let it go.
  • Social media check: Can you get the handles? @YourDragName on Instagram, TikTok, etc.
  • Sleep on it: If it still feels right after a week, it's the one.

Names to Avoid

  • Names too close to famous queens (you'll always be compared)
  • Names that are hard to spell or pronounce
  • Names with slurs or language that punches down
  • Names that only work as a pun (they get old fast if there's no substance behind them)

It's Okay to Change It

Many queens change their name in their first year. You're not locked in. Start with something that feels right NOW, and if you evolve, your name can evolve too.
