The Starter Kit: Everything You Need Under $100

beginner 7 min read

You Don't Need Expensive Products to Start

The drag community has a reputation for recommending pricey products. And yes, some of those products ARE better. But your first kit should be about learning, not luxury. You'll waste expensive products while you figure out technique. Start cheap, upgrade later.

The $100 Drag Starter Kit

Brow Coverage — $3

  • Elmer's Disappearing Purple Glue Stick (the big one)
  • This is what 90% of queens use. It's $3 and it works perfectly.

Foundation — $12

  • NYX Professional Can't Stop Won't Stop Foundation
  • Full coverage, great shade range, decent longevity. Get 2-3 shades lighter than your natural skin.

Concealer — $7

  • L.A. Girl Pro Conceal (light shades for highlighting)
  • Cheap, pigmented, and widely available. Get 2: one for highlighting, one as brow concealer.

Contour — $8

  • NYX Matte Bronzer or e.l.f. Putty Bronzer
  • For beginners, a matte powder contour is easiest to work with.

Setting Powder — $6

  • Coty Airspun Translucent Powder
  • The classic. Smells like grandma's house and works perfectly.

Eyeshadow — $15

  • BH Cosmetics Take Me Back to Brazil or any bold palette
  • You want PIGMENTED colors, not subtle neutrals. Drag is not the time for "barely there."

Eyeliner — $8

  • NYX Epic Ink Liner (black)
  • Best drugstore liquid liner. Fine tip for wings, buildable for thicker lines.

Lashes — $8 (for 3-5 pairs)

  • Amazon or Aliexpress 25mm mink-style lashes
  • Search "dramatic false lashes" — you want BIG. Most packs come with 3-5 pairs for under $10.

Lash Glue — $5

  • DUO Lash Adhesive (clear/dark)
  • Don't cheap out on lash glue. DUO is the standard for a reason.

Lips — $6

  • NYX Lip Liner (any bold shade) + Wet N Wild MegaLast Lipstick
  • Combined cost: about $6. Works great.

Setting Spray — $8

  • NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray
  • Two coats: one after powder, one as the final step.

Sponge — $4

  • Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge
  • The best affordable beauty sponge. Dampen it before use.

Brushes — $10

  • e.l.f. brush set or any drugstore set
  • You need: contour brush, powder brush, eyeshadow blending brush, flat shader brush, angled liner brush.

Total: ~$100

What's NOT on This List (And Why)

  • Wigs — Buy separately. Expect $25-60 for a decent synthetic wig from Amazon or Aliexpress for starters.
  • Clothing/shoes — Thrift stores. Goodwill, Salvation Army, consignment shops. You'll find amazing things for $5-15.
  • Padding/shapewear — Not essential for your first few times. Add it when you're ready.

Upgrade Path

Once you've practiced with these basics and know what you use most, here's where to invest:

  • Foundation upgrade — KVD Good Apple or Kryolan TV Paint Stick (~$30-40)
  • Better lashes — Kara Beauty or Tatti Lashes (~$8-15/pair, reusable)
  • Pro concealer — Tarte Shape Tape or NARS Radiant Creamy (~$25-30)
  • Better brushes — Morphe or Sigma individual brushes (~$8-15 each)

Don't upgrade everything at once. Replace one product at a time as you learn what matters most for YOUR face.
