Wig Care & Maintenance
Your Wig Is an Investment — Treat It Like One
A $40 synthetic wig, properly cared for, can last two to three years of regular performance. The same wig neglected will mat, tangle, and frizz into a $40 mistake within six months. The difference is a 20-minute wash routine and the right storage.
Synthetic vs. Human Hair: Different Protocols
The care routine changes significantly based on wig type. Using the wrong approach damages the fibers.
Synthetic Wig Care
- Wash: Cold water only — warm water can alter the fiber
- Products: Wig shampoo or gentle fabric softener diluted in water. Not regular shampoo.
- Dry: Lay flat or hang on a wig stand. Never blow-dry (melts most synthetic fiber unless heat-resistant)
- Style after washing: The wig returns to its original set after washing — that's the feature, not the bug
Human Hair Wig Care
- Wash: Lukewarm water (not hot)
- Products: Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner designed for processed hair
- Dry: Air dry or low-heat blow-dry with a heat protectant
- Note: Human hair does not reset after washing — you'll restyle after each wash
Detangling: The Right Order
- Start at the ends, work toward the roots
- Use a wide-tooth comb or wig brush — not a regular brush (too aggressive)
- Hold the wig firmly at the roots while detangling below — this prevents shedding
- For bad tangles: apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner, wait 2 minutes, then work through with fingers first
Never detangle a wet wig aggressively. Wet fibers are at maximum stretch and will break.
Washing: Step by Step
- Detangle completely before washing
- Fill a basin with cool water (synthetic) or lukewarm water (human hair)
- Add a capful of wig shampoo, swirl gently
- Submerge the wig, gently squeeze (do not scrub or rub)
- Rinse under cool running water until clear
- Gently squeeze out excess water with a towel — do not wring
- Lay flat or hang to dry overnight
Storage
Right: On a wig head or stand, away from direct sunlight and heat.
Wrong: Crammed in a bag or drawer. Even a gentle knot forms mat points that compound over time.
For travel: use a wig box or stuff the interior of the wig with tissue to hold the shape.
